Have you ever experienced your grip strength giving out before your target muscles, such as your back or lower body, when pushing them to their limits during strength training?

You want to train your latissimus dorsi and gluteal muscles to their max, but your forearms, gripping the bar or dumbbells, give out first, stopping your movement.

This is a major hurdle for many trainees and the biggest reason for reduced training efficiency.

Power grips are an essential gear to eliminate wasted effort due to insufficient grip strength and directly stimulate the intended muscles!

This article provides a clear explanation of everything from basic knowledge to choosing the right materials and sizes, and how power grips differ from other items, for those who absolutely want to avoid failure when selecting power grips.

*Prices of other companies' products are based on prices at the time of article creation. Please note that current prices may differ.

Furthermore, we've covered everything from a thorough comparison of currently highly-rated popular products and professional tips on the correct way to wrap them for maximum back stimulation, to maintenance methods for long-term use!

Please read to the end!

What are Power Grips? Basic Knowledge and Necessity

What is the Role of Power Grips? Who are they Recommended For?

パワーグリップ名称解説画像

Power grips are a piece of training gear that combines a wrist belt wrapped around the wrist and a flap wrapped around the bar.

Their primary role is grip support. In pulling exercises like deadlifts, the arm muscles often tire before the back muscles.

By wrapping the flap around the bar, a strong lock is created, allowing you to hold heavy weights with minimal grip strength.

Freed from arm fatigue, you can intensely focus only on the target muscles, dramatically improving training quality. They are an essential item that we wholeheartedly recommend for all trainees, from intermediate users struggling to progress to advanced users looking to break new records!

Do Beginners Need Power Grips?

筋トレ初心者にもパワーグリップは必要なの?

It's often misunderstood as gear for advanced users lifting heavy weights, but to be clear, beginners should start using them right away!

As a beginner, it's difficult to get the sensation of pulling weight with just your back, and you tend to unconsciously rely on your arms and grip strength. Using power grips here forces you to relax unnecessary tension in your arms, allowing you to master the correct form of pulling with your back at an astonishing speed.

Training gear is not about compensating for lack of ability, but a smart shortcut to seriously grow your muscles!

Difference from Wrist Wraps and Training Gloves

When you go to the gym, there are many items to protect your wrists and hands, which can be confusing. To help you choose correctly based on your purpose and usage, we've summarized the differences in an easy-to-understand table!

Gear Type Main Functions and Roles Structure and Usage Characteristics Recommended Exercises
Power Grips Grip assistance, hand protection Integrated wrist belt and short flap. Can be set up in seconds with one hand, incredibly easy to use! Pull-ups, lat pulldowns, deadlifts, all rowing exercises
Wrist Straps Ultimate grip assistance Long, string-like material wrapped 2-3 times around the bar. Takes a little longer to set up but provides an absolutely non-slip hold. Extremely heavy deadlifts, shrugs, etc.
Wrist Wraps Strong wrist stabilization and protection Elastic, stiff fabric wrapped tightly around the wrist to prevent hyperextension. Bench press, shoulder press, and other pushing (pressing) exercises
Training Gloves Palm protection, callus prevention Covers the entire hand, preventing friction with equipment. *Has almost no effect on grip assistance. Machine training with light weights, etc.

Especially for pulling exercises, both power grips and wrist straps are used, but the key is to differentiate their use.

Power grips are quick to put on, so they are stress-free even during intervals. They are highly versatile, useful for everything from machines to dumbbells!

On the other hand, wrist straps are the ultimate tool for extremely heavy weights (such as deadlifts over 200kg) that power grips cannot handle.

It is smartest and most recommended to start with versatile power grips and then use wrist straps in conjunction when approaching your weight limits!

3 Major Benefits of Using Power Grips

1. Prevents Calluses, Peeling Skin, and Pain on Palms!

Barbells and dumbbells have knurling (ridges) on their handles to prevent slipping.

Gripping these tightly with bare hands and lifting heavy weights can thicken the skin on your palms, leading to calluses, or in the worst case, cause the skin to peel off. Also, many people have experienced pain from the bar digging into their palms because nerves run through the center of the palm.

The thick flap of power grips acts as a strong cushion between your palm and the iron bar. It distributes pressure and prevents pain, allowing you to focus entirely on the lifting motion without unnecessary stress!

2. Prevents Slipping from Sweat and Maintains Form!

When you push yourself hard, you inevitably sweat. Especially in exercises where you support your own body weight, like pull-ups (chin-ups), slipping due to sweat not only compromises your form but also carries the risk of falling, which is dangerous.

Special rubber in power grips is designed to maintain high friction even with moisture like sweat. You can give your all safely until the very last rep without worrying about sweat!

3. Highly Effective for Back Training (Deadlifts, Pull-ups, Lat Pulldowns)!

Deadlifts

One of the BIG 3 exercises! It places intense stress on the entire back and hamstrings, but grip strength often fails first. Power grips prevent the bar from rolling off your fingertips, allowing you to focus on your core and form.

Chin-ups & Lat Pulldowns

Classic exercises for building a wide back. By relaxing your arm muscles and hooking onto the bar, shoulder blade movement becomes smoother, directly stimulating your latissimus dorsi!

Rowing Exercises

When pulling the weight towards your navel in a bent-over position, it completely eliminates strain on your fingertips. It becomes surprisingly easy to achieve maximum contraction in your back at the top position.

【Manufacturer's Direct Advice】How to Choose the Optimal Power Grip for You

Currently, many power grips are available, with prices ranging from several thousand yen to over 10,000 yen. Choosing one that doesn't suit you can halve its effectiveness. Here are 4 criteria to help you choose wisely!

1. Grip or Durability? Choose by Material

The material of the flap that wraps around the bar is the most important factor determining usability. There are three main types:

Material Type Benefits and Features Drawbacks / Precautions
Rubber Overwhelming adhesion! Sticks to the bar perfectly with a light grip. Easy to clean with a damp cloth. Prone to deterioration from sweat and UV light, with a lifespan of about 1-2 years.
Leather (Genuine Leather) Extreme durability! Molds to your hand with use and resists slipping even when sweating. Initially stiff and requires breaking in. Also needs regular oil care.
Neoprene, etc. Light, soft, and affordable. Many are machine washable, making them hygienic. Material can stretch when handling heavy weights, reducing hold.

Rubber material is recommended for:

A classic material recommended for everyone, from beginners unsure of their grip strength to advanced users!

Leather material is recommended for:

Serious trainees who want to use a single piece of gear for a long time and mold it to their own specifications.

Neoprene material is recommended for:

Those whose main focus is fitness with light weights, or women who prioritize hygiene.

2. How to Choose a Size that Fits Your Wrist Securely

手首にしっかりフィットするサイズの選び方

The most common and critical mistake when buying online is choosing the wrong size. The S, M, L sizing for power grips refers to the length of the wrist belt that secures the wrist, not the size of the flap!

It's absolutely NOT okay to choose "M because I usually wear M" based on clothing sizes. Always measure your wrist circumference with a tape measure and compare it to the manufacturer's size chart.

If the size is too large, there will be a gap around your wrist, and the heavy load will concentrate at one point, causing severe pain and potential injury. Choosing a snug or slightly tight size that wraps perfectly is an absolute condition for safely improving performance!

3. Flap Length Changes Operability and Holding Power

Shorter flaps (approx. 10cm or less)

Can be quickly wrapped with one hand! Ideal for beginners or those who want to move through machine exercises quickly, as you don't get distracted by setting up.

Longer flaps (11cm to 17cm, etc.)

Can completely wrap around thick bars and attachments, providing the strongest class of hold. Suited for advanced users who absolutely cannot afford to slip, such as with deadlifts of several hundred kilograms.

Types with a slightly wider tip or thicker padding act as stoppers to prevent slipping off, providing excellent peace of mind!

4. For Women: Small Sizes and Brands with Diverse Designs!

Women often have slender wrists (around 12-15cm), so one-size-fits-all products designed for international standards often leave gaps. Always choose brands that offer XS or S sizes.

Also, color choice is important to boost training motivation! Brands that offer cute coordination options with your workout wear, such as pink, white, or camouflage patterns in addition to black, are very popular among women.

My first impression was that the design was cool and being from familiar Adidas, I felt confident. However, some might find the grip strength a bit lacking compared to other brands.

It's much cheaper than products for serious bodybuilders, and it looks stylish when used at the gym, which I thought was a very good point. It's also easy to put on and take off with Velcro.

Correct Use and Wrapping Tips for Power Grips

Even if you buy good gear, it's useless if you don't wear and wrap it correctly. Here are techniques to effectively stimulate your back muscles!

How to Properly Wear Power Grips

パワーグリップの正しい装着方法・使い方

For pulling exercises like deadlifts and pull-ups, wrapping the flap around the bar is key!

  1. Properly wear: The correct position to wrap the wrist belt is one finger's width above the wrist joint (the protruding bone) towards your arm! Directly over the joint will cause intense pain when pulled. If there's no left/right designation, place the base of the flap towards your thumb.

  2. Bring your palm close to the bar and pass the flap underneath (behind) the bar.

  3. Flip the tip of the flap back towards you (palm side).

  4. Sandwich the bar between your palm and the flap! No need to grip forcefully at this stage.

  5. Finally, twist your wrist inward like turning a motorcycle throttle to tighten the flap. If you feel the rubber gripping the bar (tension), the setup is complete!

You might struggle to wrap it with one hand at first, but with practice, you'll be able to set it in seconds using your thumb and index finger!

Maximize Power Grip Effectiveness! Hit Your Back Directly with a Thumbless Grip

パワーグリップの効果を増大!背中に直撃させるサムレスグリップ

The thumbless grip is a way of holding that takes the effectiveness of power grips to a whole new level!

It refers to a grip where you don't wrap your thumb around the bar but hook it over the top, aligned with your other four fingers. The human body tends to engage arm and chest muscles more when the thumb is used to grip tightly.

By releasing the thumb and hooking the bar primarily with the pinky and ring fingers, unnecessary tension in the arms is completely eliminated! This allows for smoother movement of the shoulder blades, directly transferring the load to the latissimus dorsi. If you feel "my back is contracting tightly!", you're doing it right!

Can They Be Used for Pushing Exercises Like Bench Press?

Many people wonder if they can use them for bench presses, but the short answer is that I do not recommend their use for pushing exercises.

While it is possible to use them for palm protection by simply placing them between your palm and the bar (as a protective pad) without wrapping them, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.

  • The thickness of the flap makes the bar feel thicker, dulling the sensation of placing weight on your chest or shoulders.
  • They do not offer the cast-like support needed to prevent wrist hyperextension, which is the most dangerous aspect of bench presses.

If you want to protect your wrists and safely lift heavy weights, using wrist wraps, which are specifically designed for joint stabilization, is the safest and smartest option! Learning to use different gear for different exercises is the first step towards becoming an advanced lifter.

For Long-Lasting Use! Easy Care Methods and Signs of Wear

Power grips are consumables used in demanding environments. Here's how to maintain them for safe, continued use and how to tell when it's time for a replacement!

Don't Miss the Signs for Replacement!

The lifespan of rubber material is generally 1-2 years, and genuine leather 2-several years (depending on oil care). However, regardless of the period, if you see the following signs, it's a danger signal! Consider replacing them immediately.

  • Cracks or fraying at the base of the flap: This can lead to severe injury if it tears during heavy lifting! Discard immediately.
  • Weakened Velcro: If it suddenly detaches, an unexpected load will be placed on your wrist joint, which is extremely dangerous.
  • Rubber surface is worn smooth or cracked: If the original grip strength is reduced and the bar becomes slippery, it's at the end of its life.

Absolutely NO! Do not machine wash

Except for a very few nylon types, absolutely do not machine wash rubber or genuine leather products! Strong water currents and spinning will destroy the Velcro and cause the adhesive to peel off completely.

Daily Care and Odor Control

  • Basic Care
After your workout, simply wipe off chalk dust and sweat with a tightly wrung damp towel, then air dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated, shaded area! This dramatically extends their lifespan.
  • Special Care for Odors
Spray with a 1:1 mixture of water and white vinegar, let sit for 5-10 minutes, then gently wipe. The vinegar powerfully disinfects and deodorizes, and the smell completely disappears once dry – a pro tip!
(*Avoid alcohol sprays as they can strip the rubber's oils and cause cracking.)

By choosing the right gear and mastering its proper use, power grips can become your best partner, elevating your strength training to the next level. Now, get your favorite grips and challenge beyond your limits!
